Prepare for university

Posted on Wednesday, March 20, 2013

James Montoya, vice president of College Board and former dean of admission at Stanford University was in Bangalore to talk about Advance Placement programs that allow school going students to take up university courses. Poonam Jain shares more information

Schools students will now have access to courses from universities abroad. Please tell a 17 year old how this will be helpful.

This is an ideal time to be seventeen and to be an international university applicant. Universities in the US and throughout the world are seeking to enrol greater number of students from other countries in an effort to internationalise their learning environments and better prepare students for our global economy. Students who enrol in ‘College Board’s Advanced Placement’ (AP) courses will have in hand, an academic credential that is highly regarded and understood across national borders.

High school students in India will gain university subject credits even before they enter the university. What is the rush?

Candidates to highly selective universities who have engaged in highly rigorous academic courses are at an advantage in the admission process. We send a clear message that a student who has taken this course has challenged himself/herself with rigorous coursework. Many universities across the world, and especially in the US and Canada, offer university credit for doing well on the AP examinations, which are taken at the end of each course, while students are still in high school. In the future, this can shorten the length of time students spend at university, saving families thousands of dollars.

The emphasis is on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Business courses. Any focus on the arts?

Universities across the world have, in recent times, shifted focus from STEM to STEAM, where the ‘A’ emphasises the contribution of Arts in achieving a well-rounded education. We offer students the option of choosing from a variety of courses across a variety of subject areas. There are also several courses for students interested in the fields of Arts or Business, such as Art History, Psychology, World History, Human Geography, English Literature, Macro/Micro Economics, Latin and many others.

What scholarships can students avail from College Board?

Colleges and universities across the world follow their own scholarship and financial aid policies. College Board's new BigFuture college planning site is a great starting point for collecting objective information about American universities.

How can students access these courses? What is the cost of these courses?

Schools which offer this can take AP courses at their Schools. These courses can be used to supplement the curriculum currently being followed in a school. We provide the framework, but schools have some flexibility to execute their own local curricula and teaching practices. If their schools do not currently offer these courses they can seek out courses online, offered by authorised AP course providers. The cost per exam is INR 8,500.
