Applying to colleges in the US

Posted on Monday, September 22, 2008

A lot of people prefer the US for higher education because of the diversity of educational opportunities – in the sheer number of courses available and the multitude of universities. Applying to colleges in the US requires deliberation, effort and discipline. There are certain procedures students need to carefully adhere to.
At the oust it is important to narrow down on the college that interests you. Not all colleges possess an admissions challenge nor others guarantee admission. You should ideally apply to between five to eight colleges. This will ensure admission. The application fee is around $50.
When you find a college that you like, consider applying early. This allows you to have everything in place well in advance. Early decision and action allows one to apply early (usually in November) and get an admissions decision from the college well in advance. Getting all the college application requirements in place is the top priority.
  • Application forms for the college you seek admission in are available online on their portal. The cost of application can vary from $30 to $60. Some colleges don’t charge.
  • A certain form (given with the admission material) requires your previous college to fill in certain details.
  • Letters of recommendation from a teacher or a counsellor of your previous college.
  • Most colleges require SAT score. Test scores are a standard way of measuring a student's ability to do college-level work.
  • Now coming to more important bits. Essays or a statement of purpose: This can be a deciding factor to consider or reject ones application. This is usually an autobiographical statement; take this opportunity to express your uniqueness.
  • Make sure to fill out your application honestly and carefully.
And finally
Make travel plans ahead and book your tickets at a cheaper price. Book early for the best prices. Finalise your housing plans. Shop for items you will need in college. Make sure to sign up for first-year orientation. Plan your first-semester courses with an eye towards eventually selecting your college major.
