Choosing right certificate course offered by a reputed institute can boost your career, writes Charu Narula

Enhancing the skills is one of the sure-shot formulae to stay ahead of the competition in a workplace. Opting a suitable certificate course help the working professionals to upgrade their expertise. Several educational institutes including IITs, IIMs etc conduct workshop and crash courses that offer quick-fix solutions to executives.
Such courses are gaining importance, however, it still cannot be replaced with regular courses in terms of the core qualification. Short courses add critical value to the stagnating resume of working professionals, looking for specific value-add and deepening of specialisations.
“If one is looking for skill enhancement, a deeper understanding of a subject or explore a particular theme,”
Since companies constantly look for candidates with the updated skill set, one should opt for new-age, offbeat course. The hirers always get impressed by the executive courses, but one needs detailed knowledge to work in a particular domain. Shilpa Agnihotri (AGM – HR) - Wonderchef Home Appliances Pvt Ltd says, “Courses selected must not be arbitrary, but in line with professional qualifications with career path chalked out. Random courses without any practical applications or clarity, only delineate the efficacy of the employee,” says Agnihotri.
Certificate courses from a reputed institute are highly valued by the employers, however, such courses which are of longer duration are preferred. The long duration programmes act as a vehicle for application of concepts learnt.
Madan Mohan Raj, chief programme officer, executive education programmes at IIM Bangalore says a certificate course of 3-10 months duration is valued more as compared to short-term courses lasting for a week. “Executive courses help in career progression and a role change. What we notice is the role change within the same organisation- someone moving from a technical role to a techno-commercial role. The certificates, therefore, attest a certain degree of academic rigour and for this reason,” says Raj.
Noorin Khan, assistant professor at Jamia Millia Islamia informs that students who pursue certificate course have a better chance of getting recruited at a higherpackage. “Students who have pursued a certificate course have an upper hand. They are the primary choice for recruiters, and stand a better chance for redesignation than their counterparts who have restricted themselves to full-time professional courses,” says Khan.
