A global executive MBA programme for working professionals is teaching participants about emerging markets. Aaditi Isaac reports

To keep pace with the changing times, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, launched an international executive MBA programme for mid-to-senior executives in 2004. The Omnium Global Executive MBA programme for working professionals has six modules in different countries, stretching from the Americas and Europe, to the Middle East and East/ South Asia. A group of students completed the India module by attending classes at a partner institute and participating in industry visits in Delhi and Mumbai.

Rotman faculty and industry experts give lectures and help participants understand the ground realities of each country where the module is delivered.

“At a time when people are veering towards specialisations, if a business leader has to be successful, s/he has to think globally,” says Jeff Bieganek, director of the programme, who was in Delhi with the group to cover the India module. “This is a global leadership programme that focuses on increasing leadership competency and global professional performance while teaching participants about emerging markets. Participants travel to international cities on four continents and meet six times over 18 months. It also focuses on applied innovation.”

Participants learn about strategy, statistics, leadership, dynamic economies, global markets, global business operations, international finance, technology innovation, microeconomics, entrepreneurship, corporate governance, business ethics and macroeconomics, among other topics. “We deliver courses virtually and in classroom settings. Whatever students learn in the classroom and on their visits must be applied practically. We encourage experiential form of learning,” adds Bieganek.

Rechna Varma, a Toronto-based participant who works at the Canadian Film Centre, says she joined the programme to sharpen her business acumen. “In addition to advancing in the corporate world, I also have my own company and want to learn how to grow my business. Through this programme, I am learning about emerging markets, which are the future,” she adds.
