The demand for high-quality and fashionable shoes across segments and genders is rising globally. There is a concomitant requirement for qualified footwear designers across the sector. Hence, a career in footwear designing is both, a lucrative and a satisfying choice for those with a keen eye for style, designing and creativity.
While it is true that many successful designers in this industry have little or no formal training, they have still managed to make it big. However, pursuing a good course from a reputable institution offers professionals better job prospects.
Since the viability of a career in this field of design has gained popularity, a number of aspiring footwear designers are opting for a professional course to sharpen their skills and understand their work better.
There are newer avenues that are opening up for budding designers, thanks to the increasing number of fashion-conscious consumers looking for a variety that suit their demands. Custom made footwear is also gaining popularity in India. While a career in this field can be rewarding, one must keep track of upcoming fashion trends and styles.
Students who complete a course in footwear designing can make a career in footwear design, product development, quality control, footwear technology, merchandising, marketing, planning, trade analysis and research. A number of footwear companies and designer labels regularly hire junior designers, management trainees, assistant managers, and managers in different areas of production, marketing, etc from fashion design institutes.
Usually, a career in this field requires talent coupled with technical expertise. Most beginners opt to work for mass merchandising brands, sportswear companies or with established designers to learn the ropes before setting up their venture.
Besides a formal training in this specialisation, students must be creative. A positive attitude coupled with the ability to work hard act as an added advantage. Technical knowledge and innovative thinking is essential. This is because in an industry like design, unique designs and colors create a loyal fan base, thereby increasing the scope of business. Professionals must thus keep themselves abreast with classic and contemporary styles, and yet bring in his/ her creativity. A flair for drawing, sketching and an eye for detail are equally essential.
