With more than 170 countries supporting this proposal, little wonder that the estimated value of yoga industry globally is at around US$80 billion, writes Grand Master Akshar

We are now living in a world where spaces are fast opening up for unconventional business and career opportunities. In such a scenario, yoga is like the interview candidate who could easily become the employer’s favourite choice. Filled with the promise of goodness, yoga as a career option is dynamic, new and thriving.
Ever since the UN recognised the importance of yoga through International Yoga Day in 2014, thousands of yoga schools and academies have cropped up everywhere. With over 170 countries supporting this proposal, little wonder that the estimated value of yoga industry globally is at around US$80 billion.

Health and Wellness as an industry is proving to be one of the major contributors in boosting the economy. With its recently elevated status of UN- sanctioned International Yoga Day, yoga is viewed as an avenue for holistic business. Positions have opened up for the roles of teachers, instructors, lecturers, professors, private tutors and freelancers. Not limited to classes, yoga related products have witnessed a big jump in demand. Yoga clothes, props such as bricks, ropes, wheels, hammocks for aerial yoga, chanting beads, yoga mats, books and more have also gained popularity. As a result of this health revolution and changing lifestyles, the food industry has undergone a major shift towards organic food. Pure cow ghee products, dry fruits, health drinks, millet based items and other virgin cooking oils enjoy an increased consumption. Whether B2B (business to business) or B2C (business to consumers), the yoga boom has definitely fattened a lot of wallets around, and upgraded the lifestyles of many, both spiritually and materially.

The Government of India has founded the Ministry of AYUSH, which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy. This is a governmental body entrusted with development, education and research in the field of alternative medicines including ayurveda, yoga, Unani, naturopathy, Siddha and homoeopathy. The rise in the popularity of yoga has given birth to ample opportunities in yoga studies and a surge in certification programmes. Teacher Training Courses offer professional training to students on how to deliver the service of yoga to others.
There are numerous schools that offer these certification programmes that range from durations of two weeks to two years with residential facilities too. Organisations such as Yoga Alliance and World Yoga Organisation register yoga schools and individual teachers to create a global directory, readily available at one’s fingertips. This becomes useful when either looking for a teacher, or if a yoga instructor is seeking teaching opportunities at specific locations. This community enables exchanges of information, keeps themselves updated with the latest from the world of yoga and provides support for events as well.
Finally, yoga tourism has taken off in a big way. To avoid breaking down under the crisis of corporate stress, yoga retreats offer solace from the noise of the big cities. Set in scenic locations, replete with yoga asana and meditation sessions, sattvic food and even mantra chanting, these special workshops are yet another avenue for business in this industry. In India alone, the value of wellness industry has crossed Rs 85,000 crore and is steadily growing, while the US yoga industry is expected to become an US$11.5 billion industry by 2020.
