Taiwan legislators will vote on the Economic Immigration Bill in October, which seeks to grant citizenship to students and skilled workers from Southeast Asian countries. Once approved, students from these countries who graduated from Taiwan and then stayed to work for five years would be eligible to apply for a citizenship, said Taiwan’s Political Deputy Minister, Ministry of Education of Republic of China, Yao Leehter at the 8th Taiwan Higher Education Exposition (THEE) held recently in Hyderabad.

The minister announced that Taiwan will also introduce several new fully sponsored scholarships for Indian students as he highlighted that the Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP) has already provided more than 600 Indian students with short-term study programmes and internships across 35 universities in Taiwan in the past year.

He added that among 157 universities in Taiwan, 31 are ranked in top 250 in Asia-Pacific region, according to the Times Higher Education in 2018. A total of 11 Taiwan universities are among the top 100 in Asia, according to the latest QS Asia University Rankings.

“With outstanding educational quality and facility, tuition fee at each university is more affordable than in developed countries and the returns on education are higher,” he said.

Most universities in Taiwan require students to intern for a year before they graduate. With internship opportunities in technology, business, and medicine, Taiwan is a favourable destination to do an internship abroad, the minister added.

This year, there are 17 universities from Taiwan participating in the THEE to strengthen the relationship in higher education between Taiwan and India.
