Course Cursor: A course for animal lovers at NALSAR, Hyderabad

The PG diploma will prepare youth to handle challenges faced while preventing cruelty towards animals,writes Jagriti Kumari
To equip youngsters with better knowledge on animal protection in India, the Animal Law Centre at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, in collaboration with the Humane Society International/ India (HSI) has introduced a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Animal Protection. Offered through distance learning mode, the course is open to all and has a provision of only a few contact classes per semester.
“This course aims to lay down a robust foundation of animal protection laws, especially for the government officials and animal protection advocates. The course is oriented towards equipping citizens with practical and contemporary tools suitable for handling challenges faced in preventing cruelty towards animals. It will include policy development, research and litigation in the concerned area,” says Vivek Mukherjee, assistant professor, NALSAR University of Law.
An online platform has been created for this course that will make reading materials, video lectures and presentations available to address all kinds of curiosities of students.
“Through the task of engaging with laws concerning animal protection, we hope to create better sensibilities among the youth,” says Mukherjee, who is course coordinator of the programme.
"Anyone interested in learning about the legal aspects of animal protection can apply. Government officials and common public alike through this course can understand the gravity behind animal laws and ensure they are equipped to tackle concerns of animal cruelty in the right manner,” says NG Jayasimha, director of Animal Law Centre, who plans to have need-based scholarships for the programme.
The programme will commence by the end of August. The last date for the admission of the course is August 10.
