Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has introduced an innovative five-week long induction program for the newly enrolled students. The programme has been chalked out by the institute to prepare the students with the new educational methods and increase their interpersonal skills.
The programme termed as a Unique Pedagogical Experiment aims at making the students look beyond books and traditional education pattern. “Most students from varied backgrounds join the IITs, and our aim is to make them industry-ready. We want the students to develop their personalities and work on their intellectual and holistic growth,” said Timothy Gonsalves, director, IIT Mandi.
The regular classes will begin after the induction program, as the institutes want to prepare the students to handle the pressure of Engineering studies. “Many students from a rural background are often not well-versed in English. We have introduced the program to upgrade their knowledge of English. Since the medium of instructions as well as the Engineering books are in English, we want the students to have a command over the language. Moreover, we are giving emphasis on elevating the overall communication skills of the students,” added Gonsalves.
The new IITs are introducing several programs that are different from the traditional Engineering pattern. “We have young faculty members and the main stress is to have offbeat and distinct methods of teaching. Though all the IITs keep evolving, the new IITs are giving special emphasis on the new teaching pattern that helps in the personality growth of the students,” said Gonsalves.
The induction programmes were launched by IITs in Gandhinagar, Patna and Mandi which aim to make Engineering studies an interesting and exciting process. This will increase the bonding between students and faculty and promote the creative and sporting skills of students.
