After Delhi government schools, DU college to offer 6-months certification course on Happiness

Posted on Monday, July 29, 2019

The six-month course will commence on August 5 in Ramanujan College, reports Sheetal Banchariya

After Delhi government schools, Delhi University’s Ramanujan College is set to spread happiness among the students and help them beat the stress. The college is offering a six-month course on Happiness through its special section named School of Happiness, which is run under the Centre of Ethics and Values. There is no extra tuition fee for the course and is open to all the DU students.

“The purpose of the course is to provide a space for the students to deal with their daily stress and anxiety. The challenges pertaining to happiness are different at school and college level. We are not collaborating with the Delhi government, but will definitely adopt their best practices,” says SK Agarwal, principal, Ramanujan College.

“Stress is one of the major factors behind lack of happiness as most students are exposed to high mental pressure and anxiety due to increased competition. The course is focussed on various aspects of communication and personality development along with mindfulness to prepare them for future work environments,” says Nidhi Mathur, professor and course coordinator, Ramanujan College.

The curriculum consists of six modules such as Community Service, Yoga and Meditation, Life Skills for Happiness, Personality Development, Communication Skills and Glimpse of Vedas and Spirituality.

The classes will be conducted on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and are scheduled in the morning so that it does not clash with the regular classes.

“The course is inspired by Harvard’s initiative in the field of health and happiness that was launched two years ago. We want to equip students with skills to maintain their emotional health and fine-tune their problem-solving skills,” says TK Mishra, convenor of School of Happiness, Ramanujan College.

The college is collaborating with Harvard University to improve the research and curriculum. Kasisomayajula Viswanath, co-director of Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, will be visiting Ramanujan College in August 2019 to help students learn the importance of the course.

As a part of the college’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MCI Management Center Innsbruck, Austria, four students will be selected for an academic exchange programme and two students will get a chance to be a part of a cultural exchange programme.
