As IIM Rohtak introduced a course in sports management, we explore what the two-year course offerS,reports Jagriti Kumari

While Indians enjoy cricket, sports is never given as much importance at the academic institutes. While sports management as a subject is hugely popular in the west, Indians are yet to recognise it as a full-fledged career option for which one needs to get a degree.

In India, the size of the sports market is USD 1899 million, but the unavailability of professional courses in this field is creating a gap.

“Recognising this gap in the industry, IIM Rohtak has introduced the Post Graduate Programme in Sports Management in 2018, to educate professionals in a variety of sports management career options,” says Dheeraj Sharma, director, IIM Rohtak.

Any candidate with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent is eligible to apply. Work experience in this field will be an added advantage for admission to the two-year programme offered by IIM Rohtak. However, applicants need to go through the Sports Aptitude Assessment Test and Personal Interview.

There is a scholarship for any sportsperson, who has represented India in the Asian Games/Commonwealth Games or Olympics in the past.

“The decision to introduce a sports management programme was well supported by data that indicates that sport leagues are experiencing considerable growth and increased investment. Further, data indicates large scale sports infrastructure is being created across the country. Despite the potential and growth, there is a dearth of professionals in the domain of sports management,” adds Sharma while talking to Education Times.

This two-year programme is aimed to bridge the gap between the dearth of professionals in the domain of sports management. Sports marketing, sports law, financial of sports, event management, sports infrastructure management, and sponsorships among others are major subjects participants of this programme are taught.

Curriculum

The curriculum is interdisciplinary and innovative as it blends the classic sports focus education with professional development, networking and skills in the area of management. “It offers niche courses like sports statistics, sports marketing, sports economics, IT in sports, sports facilities management, and strategic sports communication, among others,” he adds.

It also envisages the involvement of participants in live projects and industry visits. Institute has tied up with various national and international faculty for core sports subjects from universities such as the University of San Francisco, Ulster University (UK), Leeds Becket University (UK), Zurich University (Switzerland), University do Porto (Portugal), British Columbia Institute (Canada), University of New Haven (US), and University of Helsinki (Finland).

 Job Prospects

The programme opens the door to be a sports psychologists, sports statisticians, event managers, sports mentors, sports management consulting, sports operations managers, team managers, merchandising managers, and facility managers.

“Significant increase in revenues from sports merchandise management, event management, utilisation of sports infrastructure, and sports psychology is also expected to grow exponentially in next five year,” adds Sharma.
