Three institutes come together to start a postgraduate diploma in business analytics, reports Aditi.Guha

In response to the growing need of trained analytics professionals, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata, are set to start a joint postgraduate programme in analytics.

Expected to commence on June 22, the postgraduate diploma in business analytics (PGDBA) is a full-time course spanning two years. It will assimilate the three realms of management, technology and statistics aimed at producing industry-ready students.

Aspiring students should have an analytical mind, be interested in solving challenging business problems and possess an inclination towards maths.

“This course will help in a better understanding and production of data. It will enable data collection for customer transactions, interactions through social media etc, such that a company can assimilate and analyse data and take action likewise,” says Indranil Bose, co-ordinator, IIMC Case Research Centre, chairperson, PGDBA, professor and group co-ordinator, Management Information Systems.

The curriculum

The programme will consist of 600 contact hours, including 200 taught by each institute where the faculty will cover the basic curriculum. In addition, 30 contact hours (10 for each partner) would be spent with business analytics experts invited to deliver talks.

“Tomorrow’s business will be data-driven rather than hand-driven. The main focus will be on decision-making. This is where the course comes in handy. It is like three pairs of hands coming together to design a course that leads to data explosion that would identify the right kind of information,” says Kalyan Kumar Guin, professor and head, Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur.

Each institute will focus on a separate area of business analytics, in accordance with its expertise. The jointly framed syllabus will mean IIM Calcutta offering business applications in the domains of marketing, finance and supply chain management; ISI teaching aspects like uncertainty and probability, and quantitative techniques; and IIT Kharagpur imparting knowledge on structural computer-aided techniques.

Enrolees will spend about six months each at ISI Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta — in this order. They would be required to take up a five- to six-month internship on analytics-related work either in a business organisation or an academic/ research institution.

As regards the selection, through the CAT, GATE, ISI MCQ for Masters, GMAT or GRE, candidates will qualify for a written test. “The test will be designed so as to assess the proficiency and potential of the aspiring student in analytics-related capabilities such as maths and statistics, computing and managerial comprehension. Based on the results of the written test, a personal interview will be conducted and the final list of selected candidates prepared,” says Bose.

Careers options

The programme is aimed at creating business analytics professionals for multinational and domestic companies. On completing it, students could join organisations working in the area of analytics. Those interested in higher studies may pursue doctoral or other advanced studies in related areas.
