With technology being at the forefront of economic development, driving businesses and creating jobs, it is a great time to pursue careers in technology. As against the popular perception of fading glory of the IT sector, the sector is noticing a dynamic shift, with innovation taking the front seat.
The future of IT jobs is changing, as the technology industry today is very different from how the IT industry has been over the last three decades with innovation being the key differentiator, says Mohan Sekhar, senior managing director, Accenture Technology and Lead – Accenture Advanced Technology Centers in India.
“We strongly believe that students need to shape their innovative and creative thinking for transition to the technology industry. Students should inculcate an agile learning culture and continuously learn to stay relevant in today’s world of constant change,” says Sekhar.
Initiatives such as Accenture Innovation Challenge is opening up opportunities for students and surge in participation in the competitions shows the increasing urge to innovate. In the last seven years, the entries have increased from 1,000 (in 2012) to 13,000 entries in 2018.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the single most disruptive technology to shape future jobs, he says. “AI is the future of growth, it will change how businesses operate. If we look only at the AI prism for example, we are talking of three types of talent needed to design, manage and run an AI project: data scientists with machine learning background, technologists with a computer vision or similar background, and specific domain experts depending on the problem being solved,” says Sekhar.
Some of the other new areas witnessing traction are cloud computing, blockchain, internet of things (IoT), quantum computing and security. These technologies will necessitate new skills and roles, opening up possibilities for the talent pool and next-generation of professionals.
He adds that from a technology services perspective, the single biggest area that the industry in India needs to focus on is talent transformation. India as a technology talent base needs to transform from “delivery at scale” to driving “innovation at scale”. This is critical as technologies like IoT, AI, machine learning, big data, biometrics, quantum computing, immersive reality, blockchain, and so on will become mainstream and play a big role in innovating the future. The key takeaway is that technology is driving phenomenal growth and new technologies will provide significant opportunity for growth in India as long as we transform our talent.
