Camera is one of the most important element of an audio-visual medium. From the mid-2010, the camera usage has gone digital, which has flared up the interest of the students. The enhanced technology of digital cinematography has the ability to turn an average shot into a sensation.
The simple use of digital cinematography has prompted students learn the technology. Several aspiring filmmakers and story tellers are using this mode to narrate their story on screen.
“Digital cinematography has gained popularity in the last one decade; it has improved the quality of our films and TV shows. The subject focusses on the technology and science involved with the digital cameras. To master this technology, a student needs to understand the intensity of lights, camera positioning, and its operation,” says Wasim Barry, IIMC-FTII foundation short course Director (Faculty) of Digital Cinematography.
The subject has gained popularity as the demand for professionals master in digital cinematography is on a rise in the entertainment industry. The students learn handling equipment, such as cameras, recorders, projectors, and computers.
Knowledge of latest software, shooting with digital cameras, digital storage devices (such as SD cards, hard drives, etc.), and video formats (such as 3D) is important.
Earlier, the films were shot on negatives but now the process has become simpler and the images are stored digitally.
Career opportunities and Employability
“With the expansion of digital media, the world of digital cinematography has opened up. Prospective students have the option to build their career as an independent filmmaker, corporate filmmaker, feature filmmakers as assistant to a more experienced cinematographer or director of photography. They can also work in TV channels, News channels as a camera person,” says Wasim.
With an increase in production houses, channels, studios, online content for YouTube, documentaries, cookery shows, most students get into business soon after finishing the course.

Several students want to set up an independent production house or work with reputed channels. “This course equipped me to learn the nuances of shooting a film. It gave birth to the storyteller in me, as a shot my film to narrate my story. Technical knowledge helps me customise my camera and use it as per the need of the scene,” says Vandana, a participant at IIMC-FTII short term course.
