Vernon : Hi Allyson, Please let me know how many times can I appear for the TOEFL test and what is the cost of each attempt?
Allyson Norton : Thanks for joining our live chat. My name is Allyson and I will do my best to answer as many questions today as possible. Vernon, great question. You can take the test as many times as you wish, but only once within any 12-day period. The cost of the test in India is $170.
Devyani : Hi Allyson, Where can I find mock papers of TOEFL? Please help
Allyson Norton : Thanks for asking, Devyani. The best way to prepare is to use official TOEFL test prep materials issued by ETS. You can find them on our "Test Prep" tab on our Facebook page here: https://apps.facebook.com/toeflprepindia For additional preparation materials, you may also want to check out http://toeflgoanywhere.org/toefl-practice#official-prep-materials. The resources here include practice tests using actual TOEFL iBT test questions. One resource that you can use to prepare is our TOEFL iBT Quick Prep. It is a set of four free PDFs with sample questions and answers to help you get ready to do your best: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/prepare/quick_prep/. We also suggest checking out the TOEFL iBT Interactive Sampler, which contains actual TOEFL iBT questions from all four test sections. It is available to download here: https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/prepare/toefl_interactive_sampler/. Lastly, there are helpful videos on the TOEFL TV channel on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/TOEFLtv/.
Arnav : Hi Allyson, I wanted to study in the UK. Can I give the ToEFL exam for the same
Allyson Norton : Hi Arnav. It's very exciting to begin your study abroad journey. The TOEFL test continues to be accepted for admissions by universities and other institutions in the UK. Each institution in the UK sets its own admission requirements, so once you find institutions you are interested in, we suggest that you contact them by directly phoning or emailing the admissions department. You can learn more here: ttps://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/who_accepts_scores/uk/ Best of luck!
Prem : Does the difficulty level vary for different candidates taking the exam?
Allyson Norton : Hi Prem - great question! All TOEFL iBT tests have approximately the same level of difficulty. Since the TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level, the more you practice, the more prepared you'll be on test day. You can learn more about what the TOEFL test measures here: http://www.toeflgoanywhere.org/what-is-toefl#toefl-test-basics
Jennifer : Hi Allyson. would there be any scholarships available
Allyson Norton : Thanks, Jennifer. It is great to hear you are interested in the TOEFL Scholarship Programme. The 2015 programme is just wrapping up and details for the 2016 Programme have not been announced yet. We encourage you to visit the website periodically for more information about eligibility: http://www.ets.org/toefl/scholarships/.
Prem : How soon can I see my TOEFL score after taking the exam?
Allyson Norton : Hi Prem. You will receive an email letting you know when your scores are available approximately 10 days after your test date. You can log in to your TOEFL iBT account on the TOEFL registration website and click "View Scores" on your home page to see your scores. See the list of dates for an estimate of when you will be able to view your scores: http://www.ets.org/s/toefl/pdf/score_reporting_schedule_test_dates.pdf
Jennifer : and is there any age limit?
Allyson Norton : There is no age or any other eligibility requirements to take the TOEFL iBT test.
Jack : Hello Allyson, thank you so much for this opportunity. I would like to know if we have any provision for scholarship facilities available in India for aspiring test takers.
Allyson Norton : Hi Jack. In addition to my response to Jennifer, we suggest using the Internet to research other scholarship opportunities that may be of interest to you. Websites such as http://www.internationalscholarships.com/ have information about scholarships for students studying abroad. Best of luck, and don't forget to check our TOEFL Scholarship Programme website periodically for updates on 2016 opportunities: http://www.ets.org/toefl/scholarships/.
Jennifer : Please could you advise me on how to crack each section of the test?
Allyson Norton : Hi Jennifer, to help you understand more about the different sections of the test, we suggest viewing the "Inside the TOEFL Test" videos. They are available here: https://apps.facebook.com/toefltvindia In addition to our official TOEFL test prep, we have some tips for practicing all four skills. For example, we suggest listening to music, online broadcasts, radio, television and movies in English. The more you listen, the more you will understand vocabulary and expressions. You can get more tips here: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/prepare/tips/ Good luck in your preparation!
Jack : What is the best time to appear for the test and how should I ensure that I get the best practice material to prepare for the test? Any guidance will help. thank you.
Allyson Norton : Hi Jack. You should schedule your TOEFL test based on the deadlines set by the institutions for which you are applying. Once you know when you need to send scores by, you can schedule your TOEFL test date. For a list of open test dates in your area and to register, visit: http://www.ets.org/bin/getprogram.cgi?urlSource=toefl&newRegURL=&test=TOEFL&greClosed=new&greClosedCountry=China&browserType=&toeflType=&redirect=&t_country1=group_India. Once you start the registration process, you will be able to view available test centers. To ensure you are ready by your test date, we recommend you begin preparing at least eight weeks before your test date. The more you practice, the more confident you will be on test day, especially when you use official TOEFL test prep tools. Although we can’t recommend specific test prep courses, the TOEFL iBT Resource Center in India can help you prepare for the test as well as discuss courses and fees. The Center is located in New Delhi. You can reach them via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at +91 9 7112 37111 if you are unable to visit in person. Good luck!
Jhanvi : Hi Allyson, how much time do I need to put aside to study for the TOEFL test. My English is not very good
Allyson Norton : Jhanvi, it is generally recommended that you begin preparing for the TOEFL test at least eight weeks before your test date. It is also suggested that you take the test at least two to three months before your earliest application deadline. Here’s a resource with some ways to improve your skills: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/scores/improve/. There are also tips in the free TOEFL Test Prep Planner here: http://www.ets.org/c/13910/index.html.
Farooque Shaikh : Does ETS offer tests for under graduate students
Allyson Norton : Farooque - thanks for your question. You can take the TOEFL iBT test before you graduate; there is no age or any other eligibility requirements.
Murugan : Hello Allyson. What score do I need to be accepted by a university?
Allyson Norton : Good afternoon Murugan. Universities and Programmes that accept TOEFL scores set their own score requirements based on what English skills their students need to have, so score requirements can vary. You can use the TOEFL Destination Search (http://www.toeflgoanywhere.org/search-who-accepts-toefl) to search for institutions around the world that accept your TOEFL scores. Once you find institutions that you are interested in, we suggest reaching out to each individually to find out more details about their specific admission criteria.
Neeharika : Hello Allyson, Though each section has different rating /scoring methods, how is each section scaled to a score of 0-30?
Allyson Norton : Neeharika, great question. In a TOEFL iBT test, the raw score for each section is converted to a scaled score of 0-30 using statistical analysis. To learn more, visit: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/scores/understand. The Speaking and Writing sections are scored holistically using the scoring guides (also known as rubrics). For more information about scoring and to view the scoring guides, click here: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/scores/understand/.
Sanjay : What are the sections of the test
Allyson Norton : Thanks for your question, Sanjay. There are four sections in the TOEFL test; Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing. For more information about the test sections, take a look at http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/content/
Devyani : Would you recommend any particular sites that can help me improve my grammar and vocabulary?
Allyson Norton : Absolutely, Devyani. If you are interested in improving your grammar skills, one resource that we like is http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-girl. Also, be sure to check out http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/grammar-exercises.html. Both sites provide explanations and easy-to-understand rules.
