Can you tell us about careers in animation?
Animation has vast career scope. If you perform well, you can be placed in various production houses across, studios, advertising agencies, broadcasting channels etc.
I am already pursuing this course. Is it easy to get placed out of India?
There is huge scope of animation even outside India. We generally suggest students to get at least two-three years of experience in Indian studios, before moving abroad. This will ensure some level of experience and expertise in your field.
Is there any production house in Delhi that handles 3D animation?
Yes, there are couple of them. We have Extra Marks, Exigent, Lakshaya Digital, and Film City in Noida. Apart from them there are number of publication houses and broadcasting houses.
Can you please suggest good institutes in Mumbai that teach animation and multimedia?
There are number of institutes all across India. I think for this you need to search online and I am sure you will get the list.
How does a beginner start his career in 3D film-making. Are there schools that provide such training?
Everybody starts their career as a fresher. The only thing you need to have is ample confidence in yourself and your work. There are a number of production houses like PaperBoat, Crest Animation etc which provide very good platform for a fresher. They train them for six months and then hire them permanently on the basis of their performance.
What is the difference between production house and publication house?
There is not much difference between the two. For example, channel production houses are the ones where TV projects are delivered. Same can be called publication house too.
Is it possible to approach any company for training, post the completion of the course?
Why not? You should start applying as soon as you are done with your demo reel.
In my last job, I was working as CG instructor in an adobe certified centre and taught Maya, gaming and new media. What are my future options for becoming a good instructor?
You should be your subject matter expert with good communication skills and interactive personality in order to connect with the students.
I come from financially weak background and cannot afford to pay for these courses. Please suggest some free courses.
I understand the financial constraint. Institutes come up with scholarship schemes from time to time. You should keep searching and apply as soon as an opportunity comes up.
Please tell us what are the skill-sets required to be an animator?
If you think you are creative, visually imaginative, love watching 3D movies or playing games, aspire to become a part of global work culture, are adaptable to latest computer technology then animation is the field for you.
I am a senior inter student. I aspire to become a game designer. Please advice.
In order to build a good base for game art designing, you are suggested to start practicing sketching, observing game and game character. You should start looking for a good institute which provides international platform and global benchmarks and apply to that when forms are out.
I am 14 years of age and wish to pursue a career in 2D animation. I have done a lot of research on the subject and I feel that the best college for me to apply to is California Institute of Arts under the character animation programme. I also know that the acceptance rate is low, about three-ten per cent. I am willing to work, but I am unsure of what I need to do. Please advice.
Since every country and institute has its own credibility and admission criteria. So I think you can be guided by the same institute.
What should I be getting into after completing my intermediate? What are all the courses that I should opt for my aim?
It depends upon your aspirations. As I said, you should start practising sketching, watch 3D movies, search on internet about the industry. Animation requires high level of hard work, passion and dedication involved to become successful in this field.
What does CalArts character animation look for in a student? What do I need to learn to be prepared?
You need to be a good visualiser and you should have your concepts very clear. Rest is your creativity and question of story line.
I’m currently studying marketing, however, I wish to change my stream and pursue animation. What are the future prospects in this stream? How should I go about it?
Do you know that even good advertisers make rigorous use of animation? You can make use of animation in marketing too. All ad films use animation and VFX. If you are willing to switch your line, then you are first required to judge that whether you have the right skills to get into it and then take a decision.
What is the size of the current animation industry in India in terms of revenue? How much is outsourcing?
Animation is second largest outsourcing industry after BPO. You can refer to the Nasscom Report of Gaming or even NSDC Report for the latest updates on the industry. Indian animation industry is poised to grow at a CAGR of 23 per cent by 2015.
What are the courses that I should apply for? Should I be studying engineering after my inter?
There is no harm in doing engineering in parallel with game designing as far as you are able to do justice with both the streams. But if you are focused to get into game designing, then you need to give your focus on the field. As this is a skill based industry, you are advised to devote time in practising.
I am very bad at sketching but I love games and always wanted to be a game designer. Please advise how I should move forward.
We do not expect you to be a very good sketching artist from day 1. But yes, you should have at least basic creative inclination towards these things. In order to design a good game, you need to be a good visualiser. You are suggested to start with copying game characters as you play them. This will inculcate your interest in character designing.
Which industries can one approach for animation specialist as a beginner? What is the career growth in animation?
A fresher can start with optimum level of package and profile, depending upon their demo reel. As you complete probation period, you get a hike on the basis of your performance. Sky is the limit if are able to deliver production quality reel.
I have completed a course in animation but now it seems futile. Please guide what I should do after the basic visual designing course?
You are suggested to be very particular while choosing your institute. You need to ensure that the institute should deliver courses in college mode and provide maximum practice time to you. I think you should switch over to an institute which provides industry exposure and switch to 3D.
