Live Chat with Pratibha Jain

Moderator: Pratibha Jain, international education counsellor, answers all your questions related to the ‘do’s and don’ts of education in a foreign land and what to keep in mind before take-off’.

Ishika Dua: What are the ‘do's and dont's’ for studying in Canada?
Pratibha Jain: You must know what course you want to apply for, as there is not too much flexibility to change courses. Read the website carefully to choose the course and its requirements for admission. Complete any financial applications at least a few months before when you wish to join. Applications to any country require official academic records of at least three to four years, reference letters, personal statements of objectives and evidence of English fluency through scores of exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. In some cases, additional essays may also be requested.
Asawari Bhatia : What are the requirements to pursue an MSc abroad? What do I need to consider or fulfil while applying to a foreign university?
Pratibha Jain: Some institutes and countries require the GRE or GMAT for postgraduate programmes. Approximate annual costs for education and living vary from Rs 15 lakhs to Rs 30 lakhs, depending on the country and the university you select. The total cost of education will depend on the duration of your selected programme. These are median figures with variations lower and above the amounts stated. Scholarships and funding options are extremely competitive and you cannot depend on this as the main source of funding. Scholarships vary from 10% of tuition fee to 30%, 50% or more.
Yash Prasad: What are the ‘do's and dont's’ for studying in Germany?
Pratibha Jain: Germany offers many programmes at low costs. Beware that some of these programmes with no tuition fees are likely to be taught in German. The courses taught in English will have a cost varying from £5000 to £10,000. Plus, living costs are high in Germany, and jobs after the course are not guaranteed for international students. You should complete level B in the German language before you apply for or join a one-year language training program in Germany.
Asawari Bhatia: Which countries accept GRE scores? Tell me about the GRE exam.
Pratibha Jain: GRE is usually required as an entrance test for all non-management postgraduate courses in the USA. Some universities in other countries outside the USA may also ask for it, especially science and engineering programmes in Canada, Germany, Singapore and Hong Kong. The test is comprised of verbal and quantitative sections with an emphasis in evaluation, logical and analytical thinking.
Ajay: I am moving to the UK to pursue medicine. What should I keep in mind?
Pratibha Jain: Medicine is a highly competitive program which requires diligent study and commitment. You need to score well in biology, chemistry and the UK medical entrance test for admission. Seats for international students at medicine programmes in the UK are very limited, so your best option for admission will be with a UK passport.
Neha: I am thinking of pursuing engineering in Germany. Can I work part-time?
Pratibha Jain: You are legally permitted to work 20 hours per week on a student visa. However, engineering programmes in Germany are demanding that you may not have time for work. It is better to excel in academics and keep your studies as your first priority, so I would advise against part-time work despite the money you earn.
Asawari Bhatia: What is the best time to prepare for the GRE? Currently, I am pursuing a BSc (Hons.) in microbiology. How can I handle my studies while preparing at the same time? What are the top universities for an MSc in microbiology?
Pratibha Jain: Some institutes and countries may require the GRE score as part of the application. So, you need to take the GRE by July of the year you wish to apply. John Hopkins University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Duke University, Boston University and the University of California, San Diego, in the USA are well-known for their microbiology MSc programmes. Approximate annual costs for education and living will depend on the country and the university you select. Scholarships and funding options are extremely competitive.
Shalini: I am shifting to the US to pursue engineering. To begin with, how do I transit from the airport to the campus? Are there any particular social precautions I must take?
Pratibha Jain: Once you are admitted, your university will give you clear directions on the routes to reach the university. Usually, you can take a bus into town and then a taxi or Uber to your university campus. Be careful of the way you carry your money and passport during the transit period. Travel light, so that you can manage all your luggage on your own.
Ruchi: I wish to pursue my MBA abroad. I will need time to prepare for the quantitative section, as I have been a humanities student. Ideally, when should I start my GMAT preperation if I am looking to begin my studies at a business school in August 2018?
Pratibha Jain: Students usually need 3 months to prepare for GMAT, but some may take longer. Applications for fall 2018 will begin in August 2017 and continue until March 2018. The earlier you apply, the better, so it is up to you to take the GMAT when you feel prepared.
Megha: I want to study in Ontario, Canada, but how can I obtain the funds to study over there?
Pratibha Jain: Some universities offer scholarships for those who exhibited academic merit during the past three to four years. If you do not qualify for one, you have to take out bank loans from India.
Yash Prasad: What is the ‘no tuition fees’ concept at some universities offering MS progammes in Germany. Is there a need for any English proficiency exams such as IELTS or TOEFL to study in Germany? What are the top universities in Germany for bioinformatics?
Pratibha Jain: Courses taught completely in the German language often do not have a fee. Assuming you will apply for a course taught in English, the proficiency exams such as IELTS and TOEFL are required. I recommend looking at the DAAD website to research German colleges.
Megha: Is an MBA degree from India valid in Canada?
Pratibha Jain: Yes, an MBA from an accredited Indian university is valid in Canada .
Megha: Is there any exam through which we can earn a scholarship to study in foreign country such as Canada at the undergraduate level?
Pratibha Jain: No, there is no additional exam. Scholarships are based on consistent academic performance during the past three to four years.
Yash Prasad: M’am, you said jobs are not guaranteed in Germany for foreign students. How can I have a successful career if I study in Germany then?
Pratibha Jain: You have to work hard to gain excellence in your chosen field. Afterwards, you should be offered a job based on merit. No country or university guarantees jobs for international students, but if you are intelligent, you will likely to find one.
Asawari Bhatia: What are the top universities for an MSc in biology in foreign countries other than the USA?
Pratibha Jain: Every country in the world has institutions which offer excellent programmes in microbiology. Decide on the country first and then consider the list of colleges located there.
Megha: What is the value of an Indian MBA in Canada? Is it better to study there at the undergraduate or postgraduate level?
Pratibha Jain: You need to be clearer. Indian MBA degrees are recognised around the world. However, visa rules may not allow an employer to import you from India.
Megha: Do you know anything about George Brown College? Is it a reputed college in Canada?
Pratibha Jain: George Brown is a vocational college in Toronto known for its practical methods of teaching to prepare students for the job market.
Megha: What does it mean to be a vocational college?
Pratibha Jain: Vocational colleges emphasize practical rather than theoretical studies. For example, George Brown College is known for its training in hospitality, so students can later work in hotel or food industries.
Megha: What qualifications do students of vocational colleges gain?
Pratibha Jain: Vocational colleges qualify students for the jobs they want. Please go through the website of the college, which would clearly state the course content and the learning outcome of each programme. Some are three-year diplomas and some are degrees. You need to research the programme you are applying for.
Yash Prasad: Is level B or one-year of experience in the German language necessary before going to Germany for higher studies?
Pratibha Jain: Yes. Most universities in Germany require the IELTS and a level B in the German language to ensure that you fit in well with the environment.
Yash Prasad: I know about IELTS , but where can I take the level B German exam?
Pratibha Jain: Max Muller Bhavan has branches in most cities, and it provides the classes and assessment exam for German.
