The University of Delhi has witnessed a 10% increase in the number of applications this year. A total of 1,665 students have registered under this category, along with 21 disabilities included in the PwD category.
This is indicative of the increasing inclusivity in DU, says Bipin Tiwari, an officer on special duty (OSD), Equal Opportunity Cell of Delhi University. “When I joined in 2012, most colleges in DU did not have facilities for the PwD candidates. Now, we have ramps and disabled friendly toilets in several campuses,” says Tiwari.
Since the colleges meet the demand of PwD students, most of them are encouraged to join the regular courses. The university has assistive technology such as screen readers that help students with visual impairment and learning disabilities cope with academics.
“DU has become proactive with its policies and sensitised towards students with disabilities,” Tiwari told Education Times.
“The increase in its applications in this category shows how the university wants to support the students” says Anil Aneja, an English professor of Delhi University and officer on special duty in the Equal Opportunity Cell.
