Study in USA: Indians account for 17% of the total international students in the US

Legislation has been introduced in the US House and Senate that would end the per-country limit of green cards, which if implemented, could benefit Indian professionals waiting to gain permanent legal residency, writes Srikant Gopal

With the world opening up for Indian students, many of them have been choosing quality education in countries around the world. The US, which has traditionally been the top destination, still attracts the largest number of students aspiring to study, work and live overseas.

American higher education institutions and businesses continue to appreciate international students, especially talent from India in fields such as engineering, physical sciences, computer science, business and many more. ETS, the US based test maker of TOEFL and GRE tests, is geared towards helping Indian students access these opportunities.

Why US education

Students are drawn not only to the reputation of US institutions, but to the prevalence of innovative classrooms and the availability of state-of-the-art facilities, access to lab resources, and online classes and discussions.

According to the US India Education Foundation (USIEF), the US continues to be the most popular study abroad destination for Indian students due to excellence in academics, work opportunities and the high standard and ease of living. The number of Indian students studying in the US has also nearly doubled in the last five years to more than 186,000.

Silicon Valley is a testament to Indian managerial and corporate talent with corporations like Google and Microsoft headed by CEO’s of Indian origin – and American universities and institutions value the contribution that Indian students and professionals bring to the table.

Indian students are well prepared

With a strong English language education tradition, Indian students rank near the top in English language proficiency as measured by their average scores on the TOEFL iBT test. With more TOEFL scores sent to US universities than all other English tests combined, students give themselves a clear advantage in getting into quality institutions in the US. The combination of TOEFL scores and GRE scores is the most widely accepted for application to graduate-level programmes in the US, and can help students stand out by showing they have both the English-language and critical-thinking skills needed for success in graduate school.

The US welcomes Indian students

ETS and other US-based higher education institutions and organisations are working with US federal agencies to protect and expand opportunities for international students and allay concerns about long-term study and employment options once students get there.

Legislation has been introduced in the US House and Senate that would end the per-country limit of green cards, a move which, if implemented, could potentially benefit thousands of Indian professionals waiting to gain permanent legal residency.

More than 300 US institutions and dozens of organisations – including ETS – are addressing international student questions directly through videos and posts on Facebook and Twitter using the #YouAreWelcomeHere hashtag. It is a campaign designed to affirm that US institutions continue to be diverse, friendly, safe and committed to student development.
