Upcoming finance lab to familiarise students with practical aspects of work, says St. Xavier’s College principal

The lab will provide real time data of different stock exchanges for finance students, writes Jagriti Kumari

With an aim to provide a simulated real-life trading experience, the St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata has decided to set up a finance lab where students can use real time data of different stock exchanges. It will also help them to practice hedging, speculation and arbitrage strategies and investment and portfolio management strategies in the lab which in turn make them industry ready from day one.

The idea to have finance lab is aimed to open new doors for the students, research scholars and faculty members. St. Xavier College is known for taking all necessary efforts to keep pace with the changing requirements of the job market.

“The proposed finance lab will help students to deal with real research problems whose outcome will be invaluable for the economy and the country at large.  The finance lab will give a boost to the different business oriented courses like BCom(H), BMS, MCom, MBA, etc, by bridging the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge and help the students to think independently for creating innovative financial products and services in the dynamic and highly competitive financial environment,” said Dominic Savio, S.J. principal St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata.
The college authorities came up with idea of setting up a finance lab at the main campus located at Park Street to give an edge to its students and help them in their professional endeavour. The initial budget allocation for the lab which is expected to get ready in six months is Rs50 lakh.
“As of now we are not getting any fund from the corporates. In future, we may collaborate with the corporate to initiate research projects which may contribute to different sectors,” he told.
Many students from the college are pursuing short term professional courses in finance and business, along with their graduations.
The lab will offer an insight into the industry, which is the need of the hour. “This will help the students familiarise with the practical aspects of work, which will make them employable,” said Fr Savio while talking to Education Times.
“We are expecting huge response from students and researchers and the corporate sector is excited to connect with the youngsters,” he added.
